You ARE the Light
Identity, Kislev, and Surrender
What does it really mean when Jesus calls us the light of the world?
If you grew up in or around the Church, Matthew 5:16 is likely a verse you can quote from memory: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
But sometimes, extreme familiarity causes us to miss the absolute weight of what is being spoken over us. This is not a passive, comforting piece of poetry. It is a baseline identity, a functional design, and an authoritative commissioning.
In the latest episode of the You Are My Witnesses podcast, we are moving past the passive concept of carrying light and stepping directly into the profound consequences of being light.
As witnesses of Jesus Christ, we must understand this distinction because suspicion can be a reaction of the flesh, while biblical discernment is meant to be led by the Holy Spirit. Yet how often do we mistake suspicion for discernment simply because we feel strongly about something?
The Grammar of Essence
“In the Light” vs. “Being the Light”
For the grammar nerds out there, you are going to love this. A microscopic shift in biblical sentence structure carries massive theological weight.
There is a world of difference between being “in the light” and being “the light.”
- “In the light” is a prepositional phrase. It describes your location and your environment. It is positional. It means you have successfully stepped out of the shadows of darkness and into fellowship with Jesus.
- “Being the light” uses a predicate noun. It defines your essence.
When Jesus looks at you in Matthew 5, He doesn’t merely invite you into a well-lit environment. He declares: “You ARE the light of the world.” As Ephesians 5:8 reminds us, “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.”
His character is meant to so thoroughly transform you from the inside out that you become the actual source of illumination to the dark spaces around you. We are placed in the light so that we can ultimately become the light.
The Weight of Visibility
When Eyes Turn Your Way
Let’s be completely honest: light was never engineered to blend in. Its entire purpose is to pierce the void, disrupt the shadows, and stand out.
But visibility brings an inherent vulnerability. The exact moment you decide to take your lamp out from under the basket and place it high on the stand, eyes are going to turn your way.
When you choose to live with holy boldness, some people will cheer, but others will mock, misunderstand, or push back. If you are experiencing cultural pushback right now, hear me clearly: Don’t mistake their misunderstanding for your failure.
More often than not, friction is the ultimate proof that you are standing exactly where God positioned you to shine. The early disciples faced slander, opposition, and deep misunderstanding—yet in that exact crucible, they were strengthened, honored, and entrusted with the message of the Church. When we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the witness stays clear because it is His radiance, not our human striving, piercing the dark.
Chanukkah
The Timing of the Light
This understanding of being the light becomes incredibly beautiful when we align it with the biblical calendar. We are currently in the Hebrew month of Kislev.
Naturally speaking, Kislev is a month of physical darkness. The days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, and winter settles in. Yet, in the supernatural realm, Kislev is the month where light shines brightest in the dark. This is the month of Chanukkah—the Feast of Lights (or the Feast of Dedication).
While Chanukkah is a historical celebration rather than a Levitical, God-appointed festival, it is a time of miracles that Jesus Himself observed. John 10:22 tells us: “Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.”
Chanukkah represents a stubborn, joyful hope that the future will be better than the past. And there is a spectacular reality hidden here for believers: while Jesus was likely born in the fall during the Feast of Tabernacles, if you track back the math of a normal nine-month pregnancy, Jesus was conceived in the month of Kislev.
The ultimate Light of the World was deposited into the womb of humanity during the darkest calendar month of the year! And because that very same Yeshua now lives inside of you, this is your month to refuse to blend in.
A Step-by-Step Activation
The Biology of Surrender
Transformation doesn’t happen by white-knuckling our way into better performance; it happens through radical surrender (Romans 12:1-2). To help you move this from a message you read to a truth you live, try this 3-step activation today:
- Identify the Flesh: Ask the Holy Spirit to pinpoint where you are living independently of Jesus. Where are you relying on your own strength, anxiety, or defense mechanisms?
- Physically Bow Your Knees: If you are in a safe place, drop to your knees. God beautifully hardwired our physiology so that the physical act of kneeling alters our biology. Shifting your body into a posture of submission moves your autonomic nervous system completely away from stressful “fight-or-flight” striving and activates the parasympathetic “rest and digest” mode. It stimulates a neurological release of oxytocin and dopamine, flooding your system with a deep, tangible sense of peace, safety, and closeness to God.
- Listen and Record: Sit silently on your knees in His presence. Stop talking, listen to His voice, and write down what He speaks to your heart. Make this a daily discipline, and watch the fruit of transformation grow.
