A soothing tongue [speaking words that build up and encourage] is a tree of life,
Proverbs 15:4
But a perversive tongue [speaking words that overwhelm and depress] crushes the spirit.
Detox
There is an important concept that operates in our bodies called “detoxing.” In our bodies there are three main detoxification centers. The first is the liver, which detoxes the food that we eat. The second is the kidneys, which detox the things that we drink. The last one is the spleen, which filters our blood. Detoxing is a fancy word for filtering. Our bodies can tell what is something good to keep and process, and what is something bad that needs to be flushed out. When a person has a detox issue, their body is unable to process the toxins, or could be overloaded with toxin, unable to filter them through. While this concept of detoxing in the body is fairly easy to understand, the Lord has been showing me that it doesn’t end there. And today I’m going to talk about what He has been showing me about detoxing our souls.
The Detox Process of our Souls
Our thoughts need filtering. There are thoughts that either come from God or come from Satan. There is no gray area when it comes to our thinking. It either is life-giving, or toxic. So, our responsibility as stewards of our body, which hold our soul, is to properly filter these thoughts as they come. We need to decide if a thought is from God or from the enemy. When a thought is found to be from Satan, we are supposed to cast it out and replace it with God’s truth.
We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ
2 Corinthians 10:5
Whatever is from God, we must allow to go from our mind into our heart. If you are not “detoxing” properly, you will have symptoms. These include many mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. This is why it is imperative that you filter your thoughts. We cannot afford to leave our minds unguarded for even one second. And the filter we use to decide who the thoughts are coming from is the Word with the assistance of Holy Spirit. He leads us into all truth. The Word of God allows us to see if the thought is life-giving, or if it is bent on stealing, killing, or destroying from us.
The Mouth
Anything that makes its way from our mind into our heart that is not of God will eventually come out of our mouth!
For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Matthew 12:34
The tongue has the power to create life or destroy.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
Proverbs 18:21
And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.
There needs to be a filter.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
Proverbs 13:3
And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.
The tongue is like the ruder of a ship. It decides the direction the ship is going. We have a choice, to stay on the path of life, or to deviate to the path that leads to death. What will you choose?
The Good News
Are you stuck in a toxic cycle? I have good news! Jesus wants to pull you out of that and bring you into His cycle of life! If anxiety is pulling you off God’s path, Jesus has a better way! Let’s pray for the Lord to show us if there are any toxic thoughts in our heads or our hearts today.
Prayer
Jesus, I need help. Show me if there are any thoughts from Satan that I am currently believing. Show me how to pull those out. And give me a better thought. If there is anything in my heart that isn’t from you that has taken root, show me how to pull that weed. I give you permission to change my heart. O Lord, you are our Father; I am the clay, and you are the potter; I am the work of your hand. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Holy Spirit, help me to filter my thoughts, and show me a higher thought that I can meditate on today. Amen.
